The Killing Floor

Its been many years since its inception; July 10th 1993. Why is this night still a great success?. If you really want to know what's up sit back, get comfortable and I'll give you my take on things.

You could easily say that I play the music that people want to hear. That's why the night is still going strong. I think on a surface level that is true. The very nature of a dj is to make people feel alive. But how is this nights momentum maintained ?. What keeps this night moving forward ?. The answer is; the reasons for its inception, i.e. why it exists. In understanding those reasons you must first come to terms with what the music I play represents. Once you grasp that, the Killing Floor's play list explains itself and a lot of things make sense. Let me elaborate. Music is a constant of life and an integral part of our achievement as human beings. From the first crudely fashioned drum to the gleaming technology of today's equipment. Music is the outlet for our inner selves. It can inspire greatness, bring ecstatic joy, or be a commentary for immense sorrow. It is a powerful form of communication, that has no boundaries of geography, language or time.

It defines us, as surly as we define ourselves by what music we choose to listen too. Each generation has chosen to speak out through its music. What has been expressed is sometimes idiotic, trashy, or throw away but the need to share, and to speak with this tool is universal. It is an outpouring of life. The more I dj, the more I have come to understand that stagnation musically is death. We must progress. But progression with no acknowledgment of the past is only a transition, its ephemeral, its not a commentary. The music I play is the commentary of my life.

The killing floor is the soundtrack of existence. It represents a thread of continuity through multiple genres that span decades. I believe that what music told us in the past is what it tells us now, only the package has changed. I am not sure if I'm a dj or a medium. Sometimes through me you may see your past or your future, and sometimes if we are really lucky we may hear the mighty dub that has played since time began.
